SOCIAL THERAPY
Social Therapy is a new approach that is not
developed by Freud but by Fred Newman. Though there is similarity in
the name of these two leading professionals but there isn’t any
similarity in therapy structure. The former aims at analyzing each &
every behavior pattern while the latter believed in improvisation,
activity & performance oriented therapy.
Dr. Fred Newman introduced Social therapy & his therapy is aimed at
development & growth of every individual. He is least bothered in
labeling a person as depressed, Schizophrenic & so on. According to
him whatever a person is suffering from- the development process has
no end. They say that although development often stopped after
illness, it could be reinitiated at any point in life. Even adults
could grow & develop.
Dr. Fred Newman & Social therapy respects each & every human being,
believes in the potentialities of every individual. That human being
can make mistake & may not know everything that others know is an
acceptable fact to Fred & Lois who works together at East Side
Institute, New York & has spread Social Therapy – a post modern
psychotherapy throughout the world. “It frees an individual from his
effort to feel the stress to always prove to others & to self that I
am Knowledgeable”
Dr. Fred Newman & his therapy empowers patients to own the therapy &
take an active role in the process of their own “Cure” He believes
that each individual can be active changers of our lives & our
society. Works to create an environment in which we – human beings-
grow & develop, so that we can make the changes that we feel need to
happen.
He observed that emotional pains are endemic in postmodern,
postindustrial society. He also observed that emotional blocks often
interfere with the learning process, holding it back or otherwise
distorting it. He worked to make the problems vanish. -Indeed to
deny that there is a problem. He thinks life is not a problem; it is
an activity. Only if it is lived as an activity, he insisted can it
be developmental.
One of the most important principles of the Social therapeutic
approach is that although we live in the culture of getting, people
are helped much more- emotionally & developmentally by giving than
they are by getting. He meant by giving the active sharing of all
emotional possessions in appropriate environments.
He has read the Indian philosophy- the Veda, the Upanishad & most of
his writings & therapies are a proof of his inclination to Eastern
way of thinking & believing.
“The Social therapeutic approach teaches people to create
environments in which people are supported & encouraged to practice
a way of living that is different from what we are used to in our
getting culture.”
To him, a people who is responding violently or abusing others is
not a bad person but emotionally ignorant. He make them learn a way
to be different in approach or create an environment which would be
different.
If a husband is hurting his wife- social therapy asks the man to be
creative & come away from his fixed negative male dominated role
that he has learnt from his childhood. Rather it focuses what other
reaction patterns a man can do to get the attention & love of his
wife.
Often we are tied up in rigid images & accept our self as kind,
angry or in some fixed images. But each individual has a capacity to
develop & come out of those fixed rigid roles in which he has been
habituated for years together.
He believes in transforming ones life & performing in a different
role, which one has never tried before. The Social Therapeutic
framework does not make use of a problem- solution framework,
because they do not believe it is useful Rather they support people
to make moves , without prescribing what moves they ought to make.
They do not label people as alcoholics, drug addicts- but help them
to live it. It is judgment free, guilt free zone where an individual
can feel free to break away from his own fixed image.
From the Social therapeutic point of view, every human being –
whatever his or her Psychological diagnosis, score on a standard IQ
test or any other societal label- has an unlimited capacity for
development. Accordingly the social therapeutically approach relates
to people not in terms s of their pathology or their problems , but
as human beings who may be undeveloped, or underdeveloped , but
whose development can nevertheless be reinitiated at any time.
In short some special features of
social therapy are-
Respect towards human being
Non Judgmental approach
Trust & belief in the potentialities of every human being
Transforming human being not by advice but by empowering them to
create an environment or providing solution to their emotional
blocks
Fields in which Social therapy is
needed
1)In schools to make the students transform in to learners not mere
individuals who has a task to acquire knowledge only.
To make learning playful & interesting
To make the students & the teachers develop through the process
where it becomes not a one way process of giving & getting but a
both way process of learning where both the teachers & the students
are benefited from it
2) House wives who live a life in a fixed role determined by the
society & feels depressed when their children become independent.
There is no end point of development. So irrespective of age anyone
can start Social therapy for his/ her development
3) People after retirement often suffer from loneliness & a feeling
of emptiness amongst them. Social therapy can make their life
fulfilled & help them to understand & develop a new perspective in
their lives.
4) In Corporate Sector improvisation & training can help them to
increase their motivation level. They have already made a programme
in Infosys, India
5) People with any form of mental illness or disability
Transforming the life of people & making them the active players in
it is the art of Social therapy. India would also be benefited by
this new approach, which can be practiced so widely in many
different sectors. There is good news also. Social therapy is going
to be started very soon in India. One can get training as well as
